I take two kinds of insulin to keep my blood sugars in range. Every morning I inject what's called a basal (or long-acting) insulin and throughout the day I take what's called a bolus (fast-acting) insulin to cover what I eat each day. The basal amount is typically double the total bolus amount each day. This is the highest dose I take.
The other day, I got them mixed up. If I hadn't caught it, there could have been a medical emergency. This is not me being dramatic. Fortunately, I caught it as it was happening. All I could say was "Oh no, oh no, oh no". But, then I calmed down. I was in the comfort and safety of home where I have lots of emergency candy stashed. Since fast-acting insulin takes about 15 minutes to start kicking in I knew I had some time. This was the perfect opportunity to make and thoroughly enjoy some French toast. I even had orange juice afterward. And a banana. This is the most carbs I've had in one sitting (well, excluding my carefree, non-T1D days).
Everything turned out okay. That was the first time I've done that in the 29 years I've had this disease.
